Why I left a Successful Business to find Greater Freedom with Affiliate Marketing
This is me, my boy and our dog Shanti, living the dream, nearly 20 years ago. My hubby is behind the camera. I think we were at Monkey Mia there... but honestly we could have been anywhere. It didn't matter. It was the lifestyle we embraced; being able to move at our own pace... the hardest decision really was what we would have for lunch. We wandered Australia in our bus ... And spent a lot of time overseas too. For a long, long while we did what we wanted, when we wanted.
For years, I lived what many would call 'the dream'.
We had a successful business importing clothing from Thailand. The profit margins were huge. We had nailed our branding and customer base without really trying. My family and I got to enjoy the kind of lifestyle that many envy - traveling whenever we wanted, spending quality time together, and living on our own terms.
On the outside, it looked like we had it all.
Beneath the surface, a quiet spiritual struggle was taking its toll.
The success that we enjoyed came at a cost. Families I’d never meet worked tirelessly in factories, enduring long hours for wages that couldn’t even come close to affording the freedom we enjoyed. While I justified it by telling myself I was providing for my family and living my best life, the truth was that I was compromising my integrity for profit.
There came a moment when I couldn’t ignore the guilt anymore. We decided to close the business and move to the country. My husband turned to his trade to keep the cash flowing, and I turned my attention to figuring out a what was next.
I have always been self employed. I knew nothing about trying to find a job. I had no plans to buy in on the local franchises in our new home town. We had always created from scratch. And I was planning to do it again.
I wanted the freedom that we got to experience with the import business - financial freedom, time freedom and location freedom... but I also wanted a business that didn’t force me to compromise my integrity. I had a huge mission.
The online business world was exploding, and I dove in headfirst. I quickly learned that simply having a brilliant vision wasn’t enough. I signed up for every course I could find, devoured trainings, and allowed myself to dream bigger than ever. But no one had told me that without a solid strategy, all the dreaming in the world would just be an ongoing, frustrating cycle of spinning my wheels.
I had no strategy. I was winging it, hoping that somehow, it would work out. After all, that was how I found success before - I figured it out as I went. Naturally, I assumed it would work again.
How wrong I was.
For every step forward, I found myself lost in another overwhelming task or problem. Passion turned to frustration, and soon I was questioning everything.
Was I cut out for this online business thing?
Was it even possible to create the life I wanted - financial freedom, location freedom, time freedom AND integrity?
I was close to giving up.
But one email stopped me.
I had been unsubscribing from everything for weeks - overwhelmed by all the noise. But for some reason, I paused before clicking “unsubscribe” on one last email. I opened it, and what I saw changed everything.
